Fort Hamilton June 21 1863 My dear, little Daughter What a long time it is since I saw you. I suppose you have grown a good deal since you left Fort Hamilton and began to go to school. Perhaps I should not know you if I met you away from home. I am very glad to hear that you have been a good girl and I hope you have tried to learn. Little girls are sent to school to learn and when they are good and try to get all their lessons well, they please their father and mother, and all their friend, and when they grow up to be women, they will be very glad they made such good use of their time when they were children. Do you remember the big house across the street from *Mr* Vanderpool's? That is the place where I board. I have often looked over the fence, and wished I could go in, and lie down under the trees, and pull the flowers and eat the nice cherries. Now I can do it any day and the flowers are plenty and the cherries so near ripe that we big boys are beginning to eat them. How long the little boys have been eating them I can't tell; but I think they and the birds began about the same time. It is a very pleasant place, but it would be much, very much pleasanter if mother and you and Frank and Robbie were here to play with me under the trees. Now it has been a long time since you have sent me a letter. I hope you will send me another soon. Goodbye. Father (On Envelope) Sarah Bruen Dayton Ohio
