Transcription
Camp near Rappahannock Station Dec. 3 1863 My Dearest Wife: I scribble a note to let you know that I am safe and all right, because the newspapers have undoubtedly greatly excited you *from ever writing me*. We/Ive have been over the Rapidan. Trying to get a fight out of Robert Lee but failing to do so on *? ?* terms. We have come back and I shall not be in any great danger of that for some time *confusing word* The campaign is now over and we are to guard the railroad at Warrenton Junction. We march for that place to- morrow and shall probably be there for some time. We have had some very rough *references* of which I shall write you as soon as I get access to paper and clean clothes. We have been almost starved. Today I had my breakfast on one hard crack er and the same made my sup per last night. There are about equal to six or seven Wolf's crackers. I had nothing to eat from breakfast today until 5 o'clock this evening. The other day I had but two hard crackers from 2 in the morning to six in the evening. Cold day Love were not allowed to have fires. However we did not grumble so much *that* *after* all, however, after we had got back to camp. I am writing this by the campfire. Goodbye love LBB
