January the 20th 1864

To Miss Mary Lalley

Dear daughter
I sit down with pleasure to write those few loynes to you and mother and Marthure and Margret and Johney hoping to the Lord that this will find ye all in good health as the departure of this leaves your father in at present thanks be to God for his blessing to us.

Dear daughter
You must not think that I am forgetting ye for not ans. your letter. I am doing the best I can for ye although I am far away from ye.

Dear daughter
I have not much news to [translate] to you today except the weather is very hard this last week so far as rain and snow and sleet but thank the Lord I am not out under it this winter. I main to inform you that I am cooking for the Co. since the 18 of September. I have a very good house built and plenty to eat thanks be to God, and if you ware near me I could give you 2 or 3 good blanketts for the winter but I hope that ye will be all safe until I have the pleasure of seeing ye all once more. Give my love to
Mother and Marthure and Margrett and Johnny and to Grand Father and Uncle Pate and Ant Bridgett and Ant [Ann]

Dear Mary
I hope you will receive those few loynes and as swoon as you do ans. them and I will send to you money anough to by 3 bonnetts for you and Marthure and Margritt for the spring, and let me now how much you can by a good bonnett for. I also sent the 9 day of January 25 dollars to Mother by Adams Express and I hope that ye got [it] We have not got paid as yet but thank be to God I have plenty money at present

I hope that you are improving in your riting for the last letter you sent me was very good for your time at school and the nex one I won't delay it a minute
