Oct the 17th 1864

Mis Mary Lalley
Dear daughter I sit down with pleasure to ans your note of the 12 ins which I have received and I am very happy to here that you and mother and sisters and brother was in good health as the departure of this leaves your father in at present thanks be to God for his blessing to us all and hoping it will continue the same. I also feel contended in mind that I will have the good fortune to be home in short to enjoy ye co. once more for I think that the war will be over this winter.

Dear daughter
You made remark in your letter to me if I should want for anything in regard of clothing. I am obblidge to you for your remark. I do not want for any but I hope that you will take good care of my overcoat until I send for it in December for there is no need of it before then. I also main to let you now that we are doing nothing at present but pickett and guard duty and as for my part I have nothing to do except sleep and eat. I do beleve the fighting will be done on the right and left of the lines and where I am is the center right opposit Petersborough 2 small miles which we can here the Church bells ringing every Sunday for meeting and can not go here it.

I have not much news to relate to you at present. My health is very good thanks be to God, and the weather is very fine here at present. The leafes is green on trees as yet and we had no rain for some days past. When you write to Patt remember me to him. Give my love to mother and Marthure and Margrit and Johnney. Send my two dollars in the ans. of this.
