November the 1st 1864

Dear wife and children
I sit down after a long and tiresome week to address a few loines to ye hoping the will find ye in good health as the departur of this leaves me in at present thanks be to God for his blessing to me.
I rec'd your letter togeather with the 5 dollar on the 27 of Sept but I had not time to ans it until this day for we ware marching and fighting since the 25 of the last month. I main to inform you that we had a fight on the 28 and I am sorry to have it to say I have lost 2 men of my colour guard but thank God I got safe so far.

I have not much to say to you at present for you will see the whole particulars of the battle in the newspapers and you may depend in a few days there will be another battle fought and it will be a hard one to, for some side will suffer sevearly but I hope it won't be me. Give my love to the children and tell them not to be uneasy about me as long as the Lord spearded so long and I can tell that I win through a sollid shour of shot and shell. I do believe I have some ones prayer and Gods blessing. I also main to let you now that I have got a letter from on the 29 and I have not wrote to him as yet. He and John is well but the did not see Martin for som time.

The weather is getting very cool this last week and I think you are better send me my overcoat and 2 pair of sock and 2 shirts and I should like to have 4 pound of butter put up in a tin can and also you tell Myars to send me a half a gallon of the best whiskey he can get put up in a can marked and I will risk it coming safe. Give my love to John Keegan and family and Patt and family and all the girls. No more at present but I remain your truly husband Michael Lally
