Letter from Augusta Bruen, Dayton, OH to Luther Bruen, 1864-04-13
Dayton, O. April 13th 1864 Dear Luther, My letter was scarcely in the office this morning, when Uncle John came in with a bill of Boyer's of $30.00 namely-the book case and he says fixing the bottom of another $17.00_1 Trundle bed $4.50 and Office desk $8.50.-As we neither of us knew about these charges I tell you about them so that you may settle the matter. I have a trundle bed but do not know where you got it. Uncle John also showed me Dr. Fewelt's receipt for $450.00 I believe. He says the Doctor said he thought it was more but did not know; Uncle told him the trouble with him was that he was a Doctor and didn't know anything else! He told Boyer that he had begun a new business now (he is an undertaker) and he had better turn over a new leaf and begin to be an honest man! Boyer said he was honest. "No you ain't, and people are beginning to be tired of it." He is certainly the sauciest man I ever knew. Lately he has been insisting upon it he isn't old if he is fifty. Last night he was at it again. "I'm young I say, very young" "Oh yes" said I "even green"; which raised a great laugh; he immediately turned round and looking at your portrait, said there was an astonishing likeness to Vallandigham! He has been saying so ever since Sam Galloway Esq. had the impudence to say there was a resemblance; and he knew I was exceedingly indignant. Minnie De Graff has the measles, which she had before only two years ago; so it seems one attack does not ensure future safety. Morning-There is nothing more to add excepting much love so I'll send you a half sheet. Augusta
