Dear wife
I set down with pleasure to write those few loynes to you hoping that it will find you and the children in good health as this leaves me in at present thanks be to God for his blessing to me.
I have rc'd the box yesterday and all was in it was spilt except the whisky and that was all right. I should thing that the exprys should pay for those articules which was damerged as it was not forwarded in quicer time. You sent it the 18 of July and I did not get it till the 9 of August, 21 days on the rode.

Dear wife
I have not much to say at present but I main to let you now that our Division went out on last Munday night and traveled untill 4 o'clock a Thusday morning when we come on the enemy and drove them back within 8 miles of Richmond. We took 275 prisners and kild 62, which we buried and ther woonded we left at a church within 12 miles of Richmond. We have not lost but 21 [dead] and woonded which ther was 9 of them out of 11 Regt and all out of one company. We returned to camp after 2 day and 3 nights which it was very sever on us in count of the hot weather.

For tis so hot her in the day that it is hard for men to bare it. But I hope there will not be a regular engagement till the next mont, for if a man gets woonded it is hard for him to get along with heat. Write as swoon as you get this and let me know how you are geting along and remember me to the children. I hope I will see them some tim or other with the help of God. Give my [respects] to Martin and John and let me know if his wif came out with him and let me now wher he is working. I hope I won't take a notion to list for that big bounty which the are giving now. I suppos it will encourag a good manny to [join]

Dear wife
I hope the childrn is quite and obedient and if not make them so and let me now is Margy growing Well, I suppose I would harly now Mary or Marthew now the grouded so big sinc I left hom; and if I have to spend 3 years in the army the won't now me when I go home. Give my love to the Keagans girls and all enquiring friends.
