Dear wife and children
I rec'd a letter from you yesterday which gave me great pleasure to here that ye ware well and in good health as the departure of this leaves me in at present thanks be to God for his blessing to us all. I feel very happy that John is gone to Callifornia for that is a better place that ever Boston was. All I have to say about him at present I hope he will have look and I hope to God that I will see him again.

Dear wife
I hope that you will forget all past vanities and take care of yourself and the children untill I get hom. And it God spares me, one more year will not be long going by. And in regard of my trouble although I am on the field of battle I can go to bed and no one to scould me or insult anyone belonging to me. I take it now as God send it for I now there is but one life and there is 2 worlds. For in my time when in Roxbury I have done well according to sircumstance which I suppose that was my own businiss. It is all past and gone and now I have come to the [age] to understand what to do.

Dear wife I main to inform you that we have no sine of moving as yet for the rhodes is not fit to move artiliry on as yet for it rained very heavy here today. And in regard of sending a box out it is no use except Steward come out with it himself and if he dose I would send nothing by him but one gallon of whiskey and 4 or 5 lb. of tobacco for it is very dear here and what you will send will pay the cost of the whol and it you have [---y] shirts mad I should like to get two; that would be anough till I would get home. For in regard of clothing we will get paid for what we will not draw. We are allowded

Dear wife
I have not much more to say at present but we expect to be paid next week and as swoon as I am I will writ and let you now. Give my love to the children and all the girls and Martin and John Keegan.
I will conclud at presnt by sending ye all my blessing, and the blessing of God I hope ye have.
