April 16th 1865

Dear wife
I main to inform you that I have arrived here today after marching over 200 miles and I main to inform you that I am in good health and in good spirits thanks be to God for his blessing to me. I ment to writ to you before this but I had no time. For this last 15 days and nights we had to march and fight every hour in the

day and night but thanks be to the Lord we have gained our object at last. On the 30 of March we attacked the Rebels in their works and that day the had 84,000 men in our front and on the 9 day of April we had the whole of them both kild woonded and prisners. The name of the place Lee surrended is cald Clover Hill 105 miles west of Richmond. I have not much to say at present but I am good health and expect to be hom in a few weeks.

A free man once more. Give my love to all the children and all inquiring friends. Let me now is father doing anything as yet. Give my love to him and Bridgit and Ann and to Michael Tarphy
