19th Century
Casts of the Frieze
Surviving casts of the Column for Trajan are currently located in the Museo della Civilta Romana (in the EUR district) in Rome and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. These two casts from the 19th century were, fortunately, not destroyed during the twentieth century, when casts fell out of fashion and were often thrown away. In Rome, the plaster frieze is displayed in the basement gallery in consecutive sections, at eye level, in four rows. This enables close looking under consistent, raking lighting. The casts in London are actually reassembled into a column format, divided into two smaller columns, which can be viewed from different floors surrounding the “Cast Court.” MJ
