Afterlife: Renaissance and later

La Procession de saint Gregoire au chateau saint Ange

Giovanni di Paolo, La Procession de saint Gregoire au chateau saint Ange, ca. 1465

During the Renaissance, a complete castle was built on top of the ancient ruins of Hadrian's Mausoleum.

The original statues on the bridge that we saw on the medallion were lost, and the ten statues of angels we see today were designed by Bernini in 1668.1 Lauro's print in 1624 shows the two statues of St. Peter and St. Paul at the end of the bridge, which were made in 1530, and eight plinths without statues. The bridge was modified and parts were added between 14th and 19th century.2
